“Home” has a new meaning today for the nearly ten billion people on Planet Earth.
All the brilliance of technological advance that allows four humans to circle the moon and demonstrate a mesmerizing return to earth depends on creativity, skill and perseverance. The whole genius achievement starts with the launching pad, our planet – the base from which they depart and to which they return. If the launch pad is sound the venture has a fair chance of success. Home is where they went out from. Home is where they return to.
Welcome home, Astronauts.
It is good that we want to explore, to find out how our universe works, to discover how we were created. Fruitful if we have a sound launch pad from which to start our life of exploring. Sound if we start with the fundamentals of discipline and generosity. Complete if we can return to somewhere we call Home.
Home is no easy shift. It becomes untidy, truculent, sometimes disagreeable. Whatever the environment, home remains home. Ask those who have none. They know about home and where it really is and when it truly exists. Ask the astronauts flying round the moon about home. They have a crystal clear but distant picture of it. Ask the rough sleepers whose pavement is home. Their dreams are of home where you are, how you are and who you are.
Most important of all, ask yourself about home. The home that launches you to work if you are fortunate. The home to which you return to rest if you are blessed. The home that is unique to you. Make your home something special. Devote time to crafting it as the centre from which you go out, the haven to which you return. Make home a solid launching pad. Make it a gentle landing place.
Above all, make it home. When we do, we will want peace.
For others, as well as for ourselves.
Just like home.
