War is loathsome. Anyone who has lived through a war knows that is true. Killing fellow human beings is the last straw in disagreement, is an admission that reason and sense have failed and, when nuclear armaments are involved, threatens humanity’s continued existence.
All wars admit we have all failed.
There is only one thing worse than war – subjugation. To appease an aggressor is to be complicit in any bullying creature’s unwanted control. Such force as is necessary to repel it is justified. Excessive force is not. Even in war there are both calculations and decency to be considered.
They cannot always be right; they must always be responsibly measured.
For the United States to ignore the threat of worldwide nuclear engagement would be a statement that it is abandoning its responsibilities as the planet’s armaments leader. It is right to have taken this dreadful step at this time.
Humanity needs a massive shock if it is to pull itself together. This may or may not be that shock. If it is, I hope it will be short-lived and decisive.
